The standard Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course outline is a one-day, 6-hour training programme compliant with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines. It equips nominated first aiders in low-risk environments (like offices, shops, and charities) with life-saving skills to manage immediate workplace emergencies

Core Modules and Learning Outcomes

  • Role and Responsibilities: Understanding legal duties, first aid kits, record-keeping, and preventing cross-infection.
  • Incident Assessment: Managing safe scene approaches, dynamic risks, and calling for emergency assistance.
  • The Primary Survey: Executing the DRABC protocol (Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation).
  • Unconscious Casualties: Checking for breathing, conducting secondary assessments, and placing victims in the recovery position.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): Performing adult chest compressions and rescue breaths effectively.
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED): Safe deployment, setup, and response to defibrillator voice prompts.
  • Choking Management: Treating mild and severe upper airway blockages in responsive adults.
  • Severe Bleeding & Wound Care: Controlling blood loss using direct pressure, packing, and bandages.
  • Shock Treatment: Identifying hypovolaemic shock and executing proper patient positioning.

The First Aid at Work (FAW) Safety Certificate is a regulated, Level 3 vocational qualification designed to comply with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. It gives designated first aiders the skills to manage a wide range of workplace emergencies, injuries, and illnesses

Course Core Details

  • Duration: 3 Days (18 contact hours) if completed entirely face-to-face. Blended options are available (1 day online e-learning + 2 days practical). 
  • Validity: The certificate is valid for 3 years. To maintain it, a 2-day Requalification course must be completed before the expiry date. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) also strongly recommends a short, annual refresher course. 
  • Assessment: Candidates are evaluated through continuous practical assessments (e.g., demonstrating CPR on a mannequin) and a multiple-choice theory test.
  • No formal educational prerequisites are required, though a basic command of English is necessary.
  • Average Cost: Expect prices ranging from £220.00 to £335.00+ VAT per person for an open public course, depending on the training provider.

  • Trauma & Serious Injuries: Treating head and spinal injuries, bone fractures, dislocations, chest wounds, severe burns, eye damage, and shock.
  • Severe Bleeding Control: Modern courses updated in 2026 incorporate best practices for controlling catastrophic bleeding, including the use of specialized trauma dressings and tourniquets.
  • Legal Responsibilities: Understanding the role of the first aider, official accident reporting procedures, and managing first aid kits.
